Visit of Dane McFarlane - Head Boy 1973/74

On Friday 14th June, we were once again blessed to have a visit from one of our Previous Heads of School - Dane McFarlane (74).

Rocking up to School in his Campervan, whilst on a flying visit to Suffolk to see his sister, he and his wife Chris dropped in to have a look at the 'Old Pile' and to see how much had changed - he had only briefly visited 25 years ago, at a weekend, so had not been able to see much.

To add excitement to the event, his successor, rugby pal and current governor of the school, Malcol Streatfield was also able to be with us, allowing these two old friends to reacquaint themselves with their alma mater and scene of their youthful exploits.

The visit began with lunch in the refectory - not Dane's usual place of eating whilst Head Boy - he did predict that Fish would be on the menu though, and he enjoyed the meal with the company of two of the candidates to be Heads of School, James and Franceso. Conversations ranged from Boarding behaviours to saying Grace ('“ Benedictus Benedicta Per Jesum Christum Dominum Nostrum.  Amen') ; future plans to best memories - the two boys were grateful to chat with a couple Head Boys in whoms footprints they wish to follow.

After a coffee in the Salon, Dane, Chris and Malcolm took the opportunity to wander around the school and see some of their old haunts. As an ex-Headteacher, Dane was able to make great comment on how wonderful the facilities are these days and was very impressed with the train-track, Sixth Form Centre and Racing Car (thanks to Tilly for telling him all about our racing team!)

Our final journey was down memory lane, where we were able to look at the school photos from Dane's first days at Langley until he sat alongside the Headmaster, Mr Young. The names, memories and stories of exploits continued to be enjoyed by himself and Malcolm, right up until we took the 'perfunctory' photo outside the Main House.

It was a genuine pleasure to host such an esteemed visitor and to welcome him (and Chris) back into the Langley Family.
