Dear Esteemed Alumni,
I would like to echo Jon Kempton’s comments and say what a genuine pleasure it was to be part of such a memorable gathering of the School’s past pupils. Meeting the Head Boy of 1963–64 was, for me personally, both a privilege and an honour.
Icenians have, over many decades, played a vital role in supporting projects of all sizes across the School. Your generosity has had a lasting and positive impact on the School’s development and daily life.
As I mentioned during our gathering, one such smaller—but meaningful—project now needs your support.
The Front of School clock has, in recent years, fallen into disrepair. It no longer reflects the pride we all share in the School or the impression we wish to present to visitors. With your help, we can restore this clock to its former glory.
The restored clock will be dedicated to the memory of Reg Blackwood, the School’s caretaker for 36 years (1954–1990). Reg lived in a small room above the kitchens throughout his service. Having endured the unimaginable hardship of being a POW in the Far East during the Second World War, one can only imagine the solace he found in the beautiful surroundings of the Langley campus. Among his many duties, he cared for the clock with great diligence.
Once restored, it will be formally named The Reg Blackwood Clock, and a commemorative plaque will be placed in the School’s reception area, acknowledging both the restoration and the Icenians—particularly those from Reg’s era—who made it possible. This will be a fitting tribute to an Honorary Icenian whose quiet dedication spanned nearly four decades.
If you feel able to support this restoration through a financial contribution, please make a donation via the School’s bank account, details below, using the reference “Clock”. Alternatively, cheques payable to Langley School 1960 Ltd may be posted to the School, accompanied by a note indicating that the donation is for the clock restoration. See all details at the bottom.
I very much hope we can bring this project to fruition, and that you will be able to return to the School for the dedication ceremony when we officially rename it The Reg Blackwood Clock.
With my very best wishes,
Malcolm Streatfield
