The annual Icenian hockey match, took place on a fine evening on Friday 13th march, unlucky for some, certainly for the Icenian’s this time round… The stage was set for an entertaining and hotly anticipated game. The opening quarter of the match was fairly quiet with neither side able to take advantage of any possession they had until the deadlock was broken by Z putting the school 1-0. A second goal for Rosie H followed shortly after, with the school taking advantage of their possession and the lack of goalkeeper for the Icenian’s. The Icenians then made use of their big squad and made changes in the hope of wrestling back momentum, and that they did with Joseph Holmes (24) scoring with former 1st XI teammate Will Griffin-Sparrow (24) getting the assist. The half ended with the scores at 2-1. Could the Icenians secure a second-half comeback and retain the Icenian cup? The Icenians started the second half strong following wholesale changes by the school side during half-time, the Icenians however were unable to convert this pressure into points. With the school potentially fearing and anticipating an Icenian equaliser they made further substitutions to their side, proving pivotal to the final outcome of the match. The school smashed home a third goal from Xavier S, the pressure was now well and truly on the Icenians if they wanted to retain the Icenian cup. Wave after wave of Icenian attacks and goal-scoring chances were snuffed out by the school’s strong defensive unit who fortunately amongst all this pressure were lucky enough to have a goalkeeper (and Mr Sitch) snuffing out attacks! With only seconds remaining the Icenians scored their second goal of the match through Chris Hall (86), but unfortunately it was too little too late with there being no time for a restart, the school regained the Icenian Cup. Final score 3-2 to the school.

Amber McIntyre’s name will be on the cup for 2026!

A great game for all involved and the spectators who came and watched. Post match discussion took place at The Loddon Angel, where we were well looked after by Jo and Frank Butt. Let’s make sure we have a goalkeeper for 2027!

The School currently lead in the 2027 Icenian Competition stakes, with a win in the Hockey. There is still Netball, Football, Shooting, Cricket and Rugby to come…get in touch if you would like to play in any of these.
